Error description

  • 4.4.3 FP3 upgrade is done using the maintenance deployer.
    The first step is upgrading the db, which fails with error:
    'Fatal error [20]:
    DB_patch1427_4431_fp003::PTCLOAD_SETTINGS : Cannot connect to
    Oracle server with the given DB_USER_ROOT (PV) and Password.
    Installation of  failed.  Check /opt/Proviso/patch/log/PV/.log
    Return_code1
    GYMCI9999E An unknown error occurred for the component DBPatch
    with the error code 1. The message could not be retrieved from
    the catalog. Command failed.'

    Root cause for this is:
    In Fixpack 1, when running the database
    upgrade, ptcload had the following menu options:

    bash-2.05# ./ptcload DB_patch1427_4431

    In Fixpack 3, running ptcload, the menu has changed to the
    following:

    Netcool/Proviso Patch loader - [settings]
    DB_patch1427_4431_fp003
         1. PROVISO_HOME           : /opt/Proviso
         2. ORACLE_HOME            :

         3. ORACLE_SID             : PV
         4. DB_USER_ROOT           : PV
         5. DB_USER_PASSWD         :
         6. DISCONNECT_CLIENTS_Y_N : Y

         7. Continue
         0. Exit

    Choice [7] (type ?<n> to get help on item <n>)>

    The db.sh script was not adjust for Fixpack 3.
    Here is part of the script in db.sh calling ptcload

    echo "y
    1
    $PROVISO_DB_CFG
    5
    $DB_PASS
    8
    $SYSTEM_PASS
    9
    $SYS_PASS
    11
    "|./ptcload DB_patch* 2>&1|grep "Fatal" && echo "Installation of
    $i failed.  Che
    ck $PROVISO_DB_CFG/patch/log/PV/$i.log" && exit 1

    Clearly choice 8 and 9 are not an option.

    Here we are doubting ptcload is executing at all for the DB
    portion of the fixpack. Option 7 must be selected to continue.

Local fix

  • Changes made in ptcload, which was preventing the db
    scripts from installing the patch correctly.

Problem summary

  • DB script was not adjusted to install FP3 causing failures.

Problem conclusion

  • FixPack 3 has been corrected. Download the pack to address the
    failure.

Temporary fix
