IV94657: WARNING MESSAGE WHEN USING JAVA.UTIL.PREFS API ON WINDOWS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node
  Software\JavaSoft\Prefs at root 0x80000002. Windows
  RegCreateKeyEx(...) returned error code 5.

  Issue is seen when application is run with non-administrator
  user on fresh windows machine where HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs
  reg key is not present.
  

Local fix

• Manually create regkey HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs
  

Problem summary

• The problem is caused when loading java.util.prefs.Preferences
  class which initialize system and user variables that create
  regkey HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs if not present. When
  application is run as non-administrator, user do not have
  permission to create the key. Hence, the warning message.
  

Problem conclusion

• The API has been updated to lazy initialize user and system
  variables to prevent warning message from appearing in logs.
