Error description

  • Admin Console: Rebuilding Hierarchy Tree Cache taking forever.
Duration of rebuild is taking too long (50-100 HOURS).

Development has done some digging, and found that the rebuild
cache is being done across all servers in an environment when
it should only be done on the process server (running the
Platform Maintenance Agent) and the rest of the servers should
    pull from the database cache.

When there are 4 servers in the environment, when the process
server is done rebuilding the cache, it puts an event into the
heartbeat queue to tell the others to flush their cache, but
the command executed on the other servers is a rebuild, not
    flush.

Local fix

  • No.

Problem summary

  • After the Platform Maintenance Agent was done rebuilding the
Hierarchy trees, it sent an event to other servers to clean and
rebuild the trees as well. On a multi-application server
environment, this could cause blocking as each server was
competing to write to the database.

Problem conclusion

  • Made a change where only the cache is flushed on other servers
when the Platform Maintenance Agent has completed its work.
Before the change, each of the servers would receive a
notification to rebuilt the whole cache, rather than just
flushing it. This is targeted for the 3.4.2 release as well
as targeted for the 3.4.1.2 fix pack.

Temporary fix
