APAR status

Error description

  • Error Message: SIGILL - Illegal Instruction.

The JIT may crash on Power8 systems runnning 64-bit JVMs with an
illegal instruction, particularly after Live Partition Mobility
is used to move a partition.The illegal instruction will be of
the form:mtspr 779, ...where 779 is the MMCR0 Special Purpose
Register (SPR).This problem can only occur on 64-bit Java 7.1
sr1 on AIX using Power8 processors.

Local fix

  • Run with -Xjit:disableHardwareProfiling on the JVM command line.

Problem summary

  • The JIT incorrectly accesses the MMCR0 SPR without having
sufficient privileges. The problem is likely to occur after the
partition is moved using the LPM facility, but may also occur
without the use of LPM.

Problem conclusion

  • The JIT has been corrected to access MMCR0 in a safer manner.

   7 R1 SR2       (7.1.2.0)
