Error description

  • Error Message: The JVM fails to start when the total number of
    dump options specified exceeds 64.
Standard dump and trace output may not be seen as the dump
    subsystem failed to initialise.
    .
    Stack Trace:
    .
Using -verbose:init shows the JVM crashing after:
    Running initialization stage PORT_LIBRARY_GUARANTEED
    for library j9dmp27...

Local fix

  • Reduce the number of dump agents specified on the command line
with -Xdump options or in environment variables. In particular
options specified via the ?JAVA_DUMP_OPTS environment variable
(for example ONANYSIGNAL(ALL) ) may expand to multiple -Xdump
    options during options processing.
The preferred method of enabling dump agents is to use -Xdump
options on the command line instead of the JAVA_DUMP_OPTS
    environment variable.

Problem summary

  • The problem is caused due to too many dump options being parsed

Problem conclusion

  • This defect will be fixed in:
    6.0.1 SR7
    7.0.0 SR6
    .
The JVM has been updated to handle up to 128 dump options

Temporary fix

  • Reduce the number of dump options
