IV38401: AFTER UPGRADE MANY 9.0.586.0 ARE SEEING ERROR: WINDOWS ERROR 00000005: ACCESS IS DENIED. FOR GATHERING OF ANY KIND.

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • After upgrade to 9.0.586.0 Gathering including downloads of
    Fixlet payloads receive the error Windows Error 00000005: Access
     is denied.
    
    This is being caused by the user session on the BES Root Server
    service not having the SeDebugPrivilege flag set.
    
    This issue should only affects deployments that are using
    Service logons that are NOT Local System on BES Root Server.
    

Local fix

  • This can be worked around by doing the following steps.
    
    1. In the Regsitry change the following key
    value:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\EnterpriseC
    lient\Settings\Client\_BESGather_Comm_UseDownloadService to have
    a "value" of "0"
    
    2. Optionally you can change the BES Root Server service to
    logon as Local System, this will only work if the database is
    local and the NT Authority/System has appropriate database
    rights in SQL.
    
    If you are using a proxy you will need to do the
    following steps.
    
    1. On the TEM Server, open the Registry and navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\EnterpriseClient\
    Settings\Client\_BESGather_Comm_UseDownloadService and set the
    "value" to "0"
    
    2. Open a command prompt and navigate to the BES Server
    directory.
    
    3. Run the command BESAdmin.exe /setproxy /user:<username>
    /pass:<password> (Make sure you use a user that has proxy
    settings in Internet Explorer or this will not work)
    
    4.  Restart the BES Root Server Service.
    
    5. In the registry navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\Enterprise
    Server\Proxy and make sure the value "Proxy" has a valid Proxy
    dns/ip/port information. If it does not the communication to the
    outside world will fail.
