Error description

  • Product: Tivoli Network Manager
    Versions: 3.8, 3.9
    Platform:  All

    Symptoms:
    Setting the m_GetNextBoundary, m_GetNextSlowDown or
    m_GeneralSlowDown parameters has no effect until
    EnableThrottling is set to true in the NcPollerSchema.cfg

Local fix

  • Insert the value into config.properties, either in
    NcPollerSchema.<domain>.cfg or via OQL

    ncp_oql -domain <your_domain_name> -service SnmpPoller "update
    config.properties set EnableThrottling = 1;"

    * Affects all users.                                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * When performing SNMP walk on network devices, CPU usage on *
    * devices goes very high. The resolution would be to apply a *
    * delay between consecutive GetNext requests on the device, *
    * but modifying the appropriate SNMP parameters, such as *
    * GetNextBoundary, GeneralSlowdown, and GetNextSlowdown does *
    * not have any effect. Further investigation showed that the *
    * problem was resolved by enabling throttling on the SNMP *
    * helper. However, there is no mention of this in the *
    * documentation.                                               *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Provide relevant background information on SNMP Helper *
    * throttling within the documentation and explain how to *
    * activate throttling.                                         *
    ****************************************************************
    Relevant information on throttling was added to the
    documentation.

Problem conclusion

  • Information on SNMP Helper throttling was added to the
    Configuring section of the documentation. The Discovery and
    Polling engines both user the SNMP Helper, and therefore links
    were added in the documentation from the relevant discovery and
    polling topics to the new topics that describe throttling and
    how to activate it.
