    PROBLEM: DB2 disk space requirements for TBSM 6x
    
    We need some information in our Installation or Administration
    guide for disk space requirements for DB2 when installing
    TBSM 6x i.e. how much disk space is required for the
    TBSM Database, Metric History Database, Metric Marker
    Database and the log files generated during installation and day
    to day running. Certain log files are created in the DB2 users
    home directory /home/db2inst1. see below
    
    Do the disk size estimates in the installation guide
    include active log sizes too?
    
    Database Disk Space Requirements
    The database install procedure asks you to chose a small,
    medium, or large setting
    that best describes the environment ? in terms of number of
    resources - that will be
    managed with TBSM. In order to simplify the process, TBSM
    recommends that the
    following disk space is available depending on your choice.
    
    v Small - 3G of disk space
    v Medium ? 6G of disk space
    v Large ? 10G of disk space
    
    This is the default setting for TBSM DB:
    Log file size (4KB)                         (LOGFILSIZ) = 32000
     Number of primary log files                (LOGPRIMARY) = 6
     Number of secondary log files               (LOGSECOND) = 10
     Changed path to log files                  (NEWLOGPATH) =
     Path to log files                                       =
    /home/db2inst1/db2inst1/NODE0000/SQL00001/SQLOGDIR/

    * The Planning Section of the TBSM install guide gives         *
    * guidance as to the size of the TBSM Database for small,      *
    * medium and large environments. But it only specifies the     *
    * data size required for TBSM. There is no recommendation for  *
    * the database log size required.                              *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Update Planning section of TBSM Installation Guide with log  *
    * disk space requirements.                                     *
    ****************************************************************
    As well as data requirements, TBSM will require database log
    space during operations.
    
      The default log setting for TBSM database is
      Log file size (4KB)                         (LOGFILSIZ) =
    32000
      Number of primary log files                (LOGPRIMARY) = 6
    
      Number of secondary log files               (LOGSECOND) = 10
    
    
    which equates to (6+10) * 4KB * 32000 = 2GB log space approx.
    
    Some TBSM operations require extra logs, and in these cases the
    number of secondary logs is increased. For example the Discovery
    Library Toolkit may require secondary log number of up to 100.
    With the above settings this would mean an additional log space
    requirement of 11.5GB disk space.
    

Problem conclusion

  • This documentation update will be in the next version of the
    TBSM 610 Publication.
