Error description

  • Product: Tivoli Network Manager
    Version: 3.8
    Component: Partial rediscovery

    Symptom:
Alterations to the order of the interfaces are not merged with
model after a partial rediscovery. Removing, adding or altering
the order of interfaces on a device will alter the ifTable.
Performing a partial rediscovery of the device does not update
the topological record in model. This can have a subsequent
impact on polling as the Poller continues to poll according to
ifIndex in the current record in model, which is then different
from the order of the ifIndex on the actual device.

Local fix

  • As yet the following solution is only confirmed in the test lab
    and not on site.

Delete the device from master.entityByName before performing a
partial rediscovery. Deleting the device should mean that the
topological record for the device that is provided by discovery
should be complete and new in model. That is then pushed out by
model to the Poller and it will adjust it's polling accordingly.

Problem conclusion

  • Product version 3.8.0-ITNMIP-FP0007 has included this fix which
will ensure if an ifIndex change is detected, the affected polls
are restarted for that device, picking up the changes and thus
continuing to poll on the correct index following a successful
rediscovery of the changed device. This will avoid unnecessary
poll failures due to noSuchName being raised.
