APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • We have identified multiple issues in the field related to the
    ITNM code that gathers certain poller profiling metrics. There
    is a CPU cost to these metrics for the Poller which may not
    affect you unless you are using a large number of SNMP polls.
    This can result in CPU usage spikes and delay polling for a few
    seconds, causing a flood of polls upon release. This is not
    usually noticed unless it is sufficient to impact the regular
    pattern of polls to the network.

Local fix

  • To disable these metrics being polled:

    Edit the file $NCHOME/etc/precision/NcPollerSchema.cfg and add
    this line to the end:

            update config.properties set PollerProfiling = 0;

    Then, restart the poller.

Problem conclusion

  • If you use, or are considering using, ITM to monitor the health
    of ITNM, be aware that some Poller profiling metrics have been
    disabled by default in FP2 & Refresh. This affects the ITM
    Health charts in TEP for ITNM on the IP Monitoring Workspace.
    The charts affected are SNMP Errors and Timeouts, MIB Objects
    Retrieved, and Packets Sent and Processed by Poller.

    To re-enable these metrics, follow these steps
             Edit the file $NCHOME/etc/precision/NcPollerSchema.cfg
    and add this line to the end:
                   update config.properties set PollerProfiling = 1;
             Restart the poller.

    There is a CPU cost to these metrics for the Poller which may
    not affect you unless you are using a large number of SNMP
    polls. This can result in CPU usage spikes and delay polling
    for a few seconds, causing a flood of polls upon release. This
    is not usually noticed unless it is sufficient to impact the
    regular pattern of polls to the network.
