Error description
Environment: This defect applies to all Tivoli Monitoring platforms. Platform i5 shows particular sensative to this restriction. Problem Description: RAS1 tracing hangs and the Tivoli Monitoring process becomes unresponsive when KBB_RAS1 is configured with excessive UNIT parameters and/or a predominant use of the "ALL" filter. These symptoms are realized during product runtime or shutdown. KBB_RAS1=ALL, for example, is likely to suffer this defective behavior on any platform as it results in intensive filtering. This is a permenant restriction with Basic Services KBB RAS1. Product documentation will be amended to warn of this limitation. Detailed Recreation Procedure: Configure i5 agent with KBB_RAS1=ALL and shutdown that agent. Related Files and Output: RAS1 log
Local fix
Below work arounds applicable only for Tivoli Monitoring: i5/OS Agent Work Around 1: 1. Set KBB_RAS1=NONE in QAUTOTMP/KMSPARM(KBBENV) for i5/OS agent. 2. Recycle the agent. Note: This will produce only limited RAS1 log and agent will end gracefully during shutdown. Work Around 2: 1) Set KBB_RAS1=ERROR 2) Comment the following 2 lines in QAUTOTMP/KMSPARM(KBBENV) file by adding the * at the beginning of the lines KBB_RAS1_LOG=(QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT01 QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT02 QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT03) \ INVENTORY=QAUTOTMP/KA4RAS.INV LIMIT=5 PRESERVE=1 The resulting lines would like the following *KBB_RAS1_LOG=(QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT01 QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT02 QAUTOTMP/KA4AGENT03) \ *INVENTORY=QAUTOTMP/KA4RAS.INV LIMIT=5 PRESERVE=1 3) Recycle the agent This would create a spool file under QAUTOMON user with trace data which can be discarded unless requested by IBM support. 4) Verify if agent ending normally with ENDOMA or Option 3 on GO OMA with default options. Note that there is a possibility of spool file may become full based on the trace configuration settings of the Agent. This can cause the system to generate a message in QSYSOPR message queue to extend the space. When this occurred, agent can go to wait state and may not exist gracefully. It is advisable to not enable trace during the normal operation of the agent with KBB_RAS1=NONE as specified in work around 1. If there is a need to enable trace for some reason, then can enable by directing to spool file as specified in work around 2 and watch for messages in QSYSOPR message queue and respond quickly to avoid any problems with agent operation.
Problem summary
This APAR is intended to document RAS1 limitations with excessive UNIT and filter specifications. While this defect applies to all Tivoli Monitoring platforms, i5 shows particular sensative to this restriction.
Problem conclusion
Documentation has been updated to include the following limitation: Note: Avoid configuring RAS1 tracing with excessive UNIT parameters or a predominant use of the ALLfilter. Otherwise, RAS1 tracing might be suspended or the Tivoli Monitoring process becomes unresponsive during product runtime or shutdown. Such behavior can be caused by a setting of KBB_RAS1=ALL, for example, because it results in intensive filtering. This limitation can be circumvented by using more restrictive filters (ERROR or STATE) or fewer UNIT keywords. The i5 OS monitoring agent process is particularly sensitive to overload
