Problem summary
Using the Java Attach API, sometimes called the "late attach" capability, an application can connect to another "target" virtual machine. The application can then load an agent application into the target virtual machine to, for example, perform tasks such as status monitoring. Before the Java Attach API, code for agent applications, such as JMX agents or JVMTI agents, was loaded during virtual machine startup by specifying special startup parameters. Having to specify startup parameters might not be convenient for using agents on applications that are already running, such as WebSphere© Application Servers. With the Java Attach API an agent can be loaded at any time, by specifying the process ID of the target virtual machine. A description of the Java Attach API package com.sun.tools.attach including options for use and security considerations, can be found in the IBM User Guide for your Java release and Operating System, under "Developing Java Applications"-> "Support for the Java Attach API". This new function is available from: Java 5 SR10, disabled by default except with Java 5 SR10 on z/OS Java 6 SR6, enabled by default except on z/OS Java 6 R26 and Java 7 GA, enabled by default on all platforms. this function can be enabled or disabled where necessary by using a system property. Consult the User Guide for more information.
