APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When a non-root user tries to perform a backup on a Unix/Linux
    platform the following error can be reported by the backup
    archive client:
    
    ANS1035S Options file '/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys'
    could not be found, or it cannot be read.
    
    The same issue can be encountered by applications using the
    API. In this case the operation is aborted, and
    dsmrc = 406 = DSM_RC_NO_OPT_FILE is sent to the application
    (DP SAP, DP Oracle, DP Domino, DB2, Informix, etc.)
    
    The issue is occurring only if the client is configured for
    automated failover.
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    If the non-root user that starts the backup  does not have
    permissions to perform a write into dsm.sys, the process does
    not free the lock from  /tmp/dsmopt.lock, leading to the
    reported error.

    Protect Client v7 and v8 on Unix/Linux platforms

Local fix

  • Change the permissions of the dsm.sys file used by the backup
    process with the following command (performed as root):
    
    "chmod a+rw dsm.sys"

Problem conclusion

  • The code has been changed and the IBM Spectrum Protect
    Backup-Archive client and API will not lock the dsm.sys file for
    a long time.
