Error description

  • Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection for
VMware provides a database level recovery from virtual guest
backups (VMVSS) using Spectrum Protect for Databases - Data
Protection for Microsoft SQL Server and Spectrum Protect for
Mail - Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server.

The restore of a database from a VMVSS backup may terminate with
    the following messages:

ANS1086E (RC104) File not found during Backup, Archive or
    Migrate processing
ACO5060E A IBM Spectrum Protect API error has occurred.

if the following conditions are met:

    1. The database and log files are accessed by their application
(either Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Exchange)through mount
    points.
These mount points are located on the same disk (e.g. on
    c:\mount).
    2. Physically, the database files and log files reside on
    multiple disks.

Note: this issue is different from APAR IT04613

    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Databases - Data Protection for
Microsoft SQL Server 7.1 and 8.1
IBM Spectrum Protect for Mail - Data Protection for Microsoft
    Exchange Server 7.1 and 8.1

    Products affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
for VMware version 8.1.0 on Windows

This problem also affects IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive
Client which is the data mover for Data Protection for
VMware 7.1. If you are using Data Protection for VMware
    7.1 refer to APAR IT20650.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics

The example here is from a SQL database restore failure.

Review dsmerror.log on the guest VM.

The dsmerror.log will show the restore failure of the log file.

ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
IBM Spectrum Protect function name : rpDoFileCopy
IBM Spectrum Protect function : fioOpen for file
    '\\<vmname>\<path\SQL DB LOG.ldf\' failed with rc = 104.
IBM Spectrum Protect return code : 104
       IBM Spectrum Protect file :
    ..\..\common\ba\restproc.cpp (6190)

Review the mount points from the database and log files. If the
mount points reside on the same disk, but are on different
    physical disks, this APAR applies.

Local fix

  • There are two options:
    1. Mount the vm disks from the VMVSS backup with Recovery Agent
and use the database files from these disks to recover the
    database manually.
    2. Use non-VMVSS type backups (VSS or Legacy) until the fix is
    available

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments Data Protection
for VMware Data Mover has been updated to handle correctly a
restore of Microsoft Exchange and SQL databases that are located
behind a mountpoints that reside on the same disk but point to
    different disks.
