APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The remote backup version of a Microsoft Office file might be
corrupted when Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations
client compression is used.
Compression for remote backup copies is set in the GUI with :
'Settings' -> 'Remote Storage' -> Select 'Compress backups'
under 'Advanced Settings'
The local uncompressed backup version of the file will be
consistent.
No errors will be recorded when the file is saved or restored
by the Client.
The corruption will be detected when the restored file is
opened.
For example for a Word file, the following message will be seen
:
"We're sorry. We can't open '<filename>' because we found a
problem with its contents.
 Details : The file is corrupt and cannot be opened"
Clicking on 'OK' will cause the following message to appear :
"Word found unreadable content in '<filename>'. Do you want to
recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source
of this document, click Yes."
Depending on the corruption extent, the file might or might not
be recovered.

Local fix

  • Do not activate compression on the remote backup versions

Problem summary

  •  Office docx and pptx files with enabled "track
changes" are corrupted only when restored from the remote reposi
tory that has compression enabled

Problem conclusion

  •  Fixed in version 7.1.4.9 and higher
