Error description

  • If the mqsicreatebroker command is run to create a broker with a
queue manager that already exists, and that queue manager has
the PSMODE property set to 'DISABLED', the command fails with
    the error:

BIP8986I: A failure occurred when the broker tried to update the
PSMODE for WebSphere MQ queue manager 'QMgrName'. Return code:
2531. The Publish Subscribe Interface (PSMODE) within WebSphere
MQ for queue manager 'QMgrName' is currently set to ENABLED.
This setting is incompatible with IBM Integration Bus in its
default configuration. The broker tried to change the PSMODE to
    COMPATIBILITY but the request failed.
Ensure that the WebSphere MQ command server is running and is
    able to process PCF requests.

The error text is incorrect, although the return code of '2531'
does equate to MQRC_PUBSUB_INHIBITED which is a correct
reflection of the PSMODE state of 'DISABLED'.

Local fix

  • Manually change the queue manager's PSMODE setting to 'COMPAT'
    and re-run the mqsicreatebroker command.

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
If the mqsicreatebroker command is run to create a broker with a
queue manager that already exists, and that queue manager has
the PSMODE (Publish/Subscribe mode) property set to 'DISABLED',
the command fails with the error:

BIP8986I: A failure occurred when the broker tried to update the
PSMODE for WebSphere MQ queue manager 'QMgrName'. Return
code:2531. The Publish Subscribe Interface (PSMODE) within
WebSphere MQ for queue manager 'QMgrName' is currently set to
ENABLED. This setting is incompatible with IBM Integration Bus
    in its
default configuration. The broker tried to change the PSMODE to
COMPATIBILITY but the request failed. Ensure that the WebSphere
MQ command server is running and is able to process PCF
    requests.

The error text is incorrect for two reasons. Firstly, the PSMODE
property actually had a value of 'DISABLED', not 'ENABLED' as
reported. The return code of '2531' does however equate to
MQRC_PUBSUB_INHIBITED which is a correct reflection of the
PSMODE state. Secondly, the failure occurs when trying to create
a WebSphere MQ Topic object. It is not trying to update the
PSMODE value, but the create attempt fails because publish
    subscribe is disabled.

There are a number of resource name changes between WebSphere
Message Broker and IBM Integration Bus Version 9.0. For details

Problem conclusion

  • The mqsicreatebroker command now sets PSMODE to COMPAT if it has
a current value of DISABLED, and it will give a more appropriate
error message if it fails to create a TOPIC object.
