Error description
The Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server documentation needs clarification on how mailbox history information is retained on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. The current design for storing mailbox history information is to retain objects in the history indefinitely. This means that under no circumstances will the objects within the history be marked inactive and eligible for expiration. For example if the mailbox user is removed from Active Directory, and all the backups which may have contained that mailbox have been expired, the history retains this information. This will allow those mailboxes to still be seen within the restore search views even though the associated backups may have all expired. Additionally, the mailbox restore list (which is populated from the mailbox history) is not intended to be a list of mailboxes that can be restored. It is made available for ease of use. Problem conclusion
The following information is an addition to the content published for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail Version 6.1/6.3/6.4/7.1, Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server, Installation and User's Guide (IT03558) Mailbox history retention Even if a mailbox user is deleted from Active Directory and backups that contained that mailbox are expired, Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server retains the mailbox history information indefinitely on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Therefore, the mailbox history information for deleted mailboxes can still be seen within the restore search views even though the associated backups might be expired. The mailbox restore list, which is populated from the mailbox history, is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of mailboxes that can be restored. It is made available for ease of use. Updates to the Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server, Installation and User's Guide will be incorporated in the next revision of the publication. ========== The following information is an addition to the content published for IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Windows Version 2.2/3.1/3.2/4.1, Installation and User's Guide (IT03558) Mailbox history retention Even if a mailbox user is deleted from Active Directory and backups that contained that mailbox are expired, Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Windows retains the mailbox history information indefinitely on the Tivoli Storage Manager server.
