Error description
Error Message: j9vm.228 * ** ASSERTION FAILED ** at ./VMAccess.cpp:290: (0 == ((vmThread)->publicFlags & J9_PUBLIC_FLAGS_VM_ACCESS)) Message is reported in stderr. . Stack Trace: N/A . The issue only happens in a constrained memory environment.
Local fix
This issue can be potentially alleviated by reducing the amount of memory used by the JVM heap by specifying a smaller value for -Xmx JVM heap option, or by reducing the number of JIT compilation threads by specifying the -XcompilationThreads1 option on the command line. Note that either of these potential workarounds may have an affect on startup and throughput of the application.
Problem summary
The problem is caused by the JIT compiler not properly cleaning up VM access when a JIT compilation fails due to an out of memory situation.
Problem conclusion
The JIT has been updated to prevent the assertion or crash from happening. . This APAR will be fixed in the following Java Releases: 8 SR5 FP6 (8.0.5.6) .
