  Setting the command line option
  -Djava.lang.string.substring.nocopy=true avoided the problem in
  earlier releases, but it seems to have no effect now.
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• The -Djava.lang.string.substring.nocopy=true workaround for
  avoiding sharing of the underlying string value array was
  inadvertently removed in Java 8 SR5. Application code which
  relied on this system property may generate OutOfMemoryErrors.
  

Problem conclusion

• The -Djava.lang.string.substring.nocopy=true system property
  workaround has been re-instated.
