APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The Tivoli Storage Manager BACKUP NODE/NAS command with TOC=YES
    will pin the active log (recovery log) while generating the
    table-of-contents information into a temporary table.
    
    After completion of the NDMP backup process, either with
    success or failure (i.e. an admin issues CANCEL PROC against
    the backup), the server can leave a pinning transaction open
    to this TOC temporary table for the duration of the server
    TOCLOADRETENTION parameter.  By default, the TOCLOADRETENTION
    parameter is 120 minutes.  The minimum value is 30 minutes.
    
    This behavior can lead to unexpected active log growth.
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    Collect log pin diagnostics to determine if an active
    transaction exists against the NDMP.Nodes temporary table,
    but no corresponding thread exists for the transaction.

Local fix

  • Run BACKUP NODE without the TOC=yes parameter.  If TOC=yes
    is required, reduce the TOCLOADRETENTION parameter to 30
    minutes to lessen the impact.
