Error description

  • FastBack Server may go into the limited mode due to "StorageNet
is not accessible" error after Windows system shutdown and
restarted. This problem may happen only with Windows 64 bit
system on that FastBack Server was installed and configured
    using the data deduplicated repository.

When Windows is shutting down, the Data Deduplication
(StorageNet) service attempts to terminate gracefully, but time
out may occur because of large amount of data that needs
hardening (i.e. moving data from memory to disk for
persistency) by Data Deduplication. Time out results in the
ungraceful termination of the service. Due to ungraceful
termination, Data Deduplication service may go into the
long-running recovery of "Unclean Shutdown" after reboot and is
inaccessible from FastBack Server while the recovery is running.

The following logs are printed repeatedly in sn_server_trace.log
while the recovery is in progress:
    >>>
    YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss.sss recovery.c recoverFromUncleanShutdown
    941 hostname Recovering transactions.
    YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss.sss recovery.c recoverFromUncleanShutdown
    953 hostname Recovering transactions complete.
    YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss.sss recovery.c recoverFromUncleanShutdown
954 hostname Recovering accounting and hashtable.

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions affected:
FastBack Data Deduplication Server 6.1.x for all supported
    Windows 64 bit platform

    Additional Keywords:
    None

    Additional L2 info:
To avoid the issue, FastBack installation program for Windows 64
bit has to extend the value of
    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillSer
viceTimeout to 300000 (300 seconds) that is same value as the
installation program for Windows 32bit does.

    Initial Impact:
    Medium

Local fix

  • Set the value of
    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillSer
    viceTimeout to 300000.
Regarding WaitToKillServiceTimeout of Windows 2008 R2, there is
a know issue published from Microsoft. Please refer to
    Microsoft KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2549760/en-us.
