Error description

  • Error Description: During a full backup, IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager for Mail Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange fails to
inactivate incremental legacy backups of Exchange databases when
the number of objects eligible for inactivation exceeds the
    value of the TxnGroupMax option.
This problem occurs with API 6.3.x and higher.

VSS backups are not affected by this issue.

Note: The TxnGroupMax option is defined on the Tivoli Storage
Manager server for the node that performs the backups.

Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: All versions of Data
Protection for Microsoft Exchange which use API level 6.3.x or
    higher

    Other Affected Products / Components:

All versions of Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft
Exchange which use API level 6.3.x or higher.

Customer/L2 Diagnostics: This problem can be verified by
querying the Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange backups
information. On the Data Protection for Exchange side, you will
see incremental backups with no associated full backup. On the
Tivoli Storage Manager server side, you will find that those
same incremental objects do not have DEACTIVATION_DATE. These
should show a date which reflects the full backup that
deactivated the full it was bound to.

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: tdp tdpexc incr expire

Local fix

  • Increase the value of the TxnGroupMax option for this
    node on the TSM Server.
    1. From the Tivoli Storage Manager server command line issue:
q node NODE_NAME f=d and take note of the current value for the
     Transaction Group Max
Note: The NODE_NAME will be the node associated with the
     Exchange backups, not the localdsmagent.
    2. Update txngroupmax for this node with a new value:
     update node NODE_NAME txngroupmax=65000
    3. Run a FULL backup of the databases. The orphaned
incremental objects will be deactivated and will follow the
    current retention settings.
    4. Restore the initial value of the TxnGroupMax option (from
    step 1).
