IC89351: WINRM CLIENT OR WS MANAGEMENT FAILURE WHEN ATTEMPTING TO USE THE DATA PROTECTION OR FLASHCOPY MANAGER EXCHANGE

Error description

  • When attempting a FlashCopy Manager for Exchange or Tivoli
    Storage Manager for Mail Data Protection for Exchange backup,
    restore or query it can fail.  If using the GUI interface, the
    failure is seen when attempting to expand the Exchange Server
    Databases, which would be during the Exchange powershell
    connection.  The following error is seen:
    Connecting to remote server failed with the following error
    message :
     The WinRM client cannot process the request. The WinRM client
     tried to use Negotiate authentication mechanism, but the
     destination computer (EXCHDB01) returned an 'access denied'
     error. Change the configuration to allow Negotiate
     authentication mechanism to be used or specify one of the
     authentication mechanisms supported by the server. To use
     Kerberos, specify the local computer name as the remote
     destination. Also verify that the client computer and the
     destination computer are joined to a domain. To use Basic,
     specify the local computer name as the remote destination,
     specify Basic authentication and provide user name and
     password.Possible authentication mechanisms reported by server:

    This may occur after the Windows system is upgraded with a
    patch such that WS Management is upgraded to version 3.0.
    There may also be other scenarios that can cause this to occur.

    VERSIONS AFFECTED:   This problem affects CLI, MFC GUI, and MMC
    GUI. for all supported versions of the Data Protection for
    Exchange and FlashCopy Manager for Exchange

Local fix

  • Uninstall the Windows Management Framework 3.0.

    Windows Management Framework 3.0 is not supported in Exchange
    2007 or 2010 environments.

    If/when this becomes a supported Microsoft configuration,
    Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server and FlashCopy
    Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server will evaluate when/how
    to add support for the new configuration. This statement is
    subject to change at the discretion of IBM and does not
    indicate committment to add support in the future, even if
    available by Mircrosoft.
    

Problem conclusion

  •  Windows Management 3.0 is not supported with
    with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and 2010 as per current
    information published by Microsoft. Therefore, Data Protection
    for Microsoft Exchange and FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft
    Exchange do not support this configuration either.
