Error description

  • Error Description:
    When an attempt to modify a mib variable that's used for
    issuing commands through SNMP, the following error is
    received::
    $ snmpinfo -m set -c private -h 127.0.0.1 \
      ibmAdsmServerScript1.1=QUERY_DB
    invalid value for variable "ibmAdsmServerScript1.1": "QUERY_DB"

    - snmpinfo -m get work

    $ snmpinfo -m get -c private -h 127.0.0.1 \
      ibmAdsmServerScript1.1
    ibmAdsmServerScript1.1 = ""

    The problem is that some definitions in the file adsmserv.mib
    should be defined as DisplayString instead of "OctetString" for
    DataType.
    As an OctetString, data must be entered as such i. e. the
    literal
    "QUERY_DB" must be given as a chain of ASCII codes like this:
    51:55:45:52:5b:5f:44:42. This argument (ASCII code) is accepted
    and processed
    correctly.

Local fix

  • Changing in the mib file the DataType from OctetString to
    DisplayString will work and the data can be passed as literal
    (i.e. QUERY_DB).

    Versions Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager 6.x on all platform
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics (If Applicable)
    Initial Impact: Low
    Additional Keywords:mib invalid value octetstring
    ibmAdsmServerScript1.1
