Error description
In a lan-free environment, the following can occur, when there is required data in a pool that does not have a lan-free path; 1. A client asks for a file to be restored. Since this goes through the storage agent the first request will ignore disk storage pool volumes. 2. If the file is available through a lan-free path we will restore it from there, hence copy pool volume mount. 3. If the file is not available through a lan-free path then the data will be proxied over the lan from the server through the storage agent to the client. Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager server 5.5, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 on all platforms Initial Impact: low Additional Keywords: TSM zz61 zz62 zz63 mount copypool primary pool stgpool restore CTL
Local fix

Problem conclusion
In the "Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide," in the section "Optimizing restore operations for clients," the subsection "Environment considerations" will be updated. The following note will be added: "Restriction: Restore operations that use storage agents in LAN-free configurations might restore files from a copy storage pool even though the data might be retrievable from a primary storage pool. This might happen if the restore request is for a specific file, or the restore request is not utilizing the no-query method, and the primary copy of the file is stored in a storage pool that is not accessible through a LAN-free path. This can also impact non-restore situations such as Tivoli Storage Manager for VE backup operations. In a Tivoli Storage Manager for VE environment, the preferred storage method for virtual machine control files is disk, such that a mount is not needed to restore the file during the incremental backup process. These virtual machine control files not only need to be placed on disk, but they should not be backed up to a copy storage pool that is available through a LAN-free path. If they are, a tape mount will be used to restore the files during a LAN-free incremental backup from a Tivoli Storage Manager for VE client." Affected platforms: AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, and Windows.
