Error description

  • When using scheduled email backups and defining a too small
quota limit on the remote location, it is possible to reach
a condition where the occupancy statistics are reset and
do not reflect the real occupancy anymore.

This can be due to the designed behaviour difference
between standard versioned file backups and scheduled
    email backups :

       Standard Remote Backup Email Backup
       ---------------------- ------------
Files are purged when Files are not purged to
the remotepool quota is make room for more files.
       reached to make room for
       more files.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :

This example shows the problem :

    1. Define a quota limit of 5 MB on the remote location
    2. Configure Tivoli Data Protection for Files to protect
       a file A.pst of 1 MB
    3. Scheduled mail replication to the remote location copies
       the file A.pst without problem.
    4. Define 3 new files of 1 MB : B.pst, C.pst, D.pst
    5. Again, scheduled replication copies these files and
current remote occupancy is still ok : 4 MB < quota of 5 MB
    6. Define a new file E.pst of 1 MB and backup also another
       small file : x.txt
    8. Tivoli Data Protection for Files will not be able to purge
an e-mail file to get 20% below the defined quota limit
of 5 MB. The statistics will be reset and will report only
       the occupancy for file x.txt

    Versions Affected:
Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files 3.1
    Fastback for Workstations 6.x

    Initial Impact: Low
    Additional Keywords: cdp fb4w FSB4WS
                         continuous data protection for files
                         fastback for workstations

Local fix

  • 1. Define the Maximum space for backups large enough to
contain all the intended mail file backups in addition
to all the other files intended for backup.
Please have a look at this technical document :
       http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21259559
    2. Then to get back to normal :
       Open a command line prompt,
change directory to the install directory,
run the command "fpa sync execute=1",
and wait for it to finish.

Problem summary

  • Remote location occupancy statistics might be r
eset when defined quota limit is exceeded.

Problem conclusion

  • Fixed in version 6.3.0.2 or higher
