IC86976: PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT FOR FILE LIST BASED EXPIRATION PROCESSING OF THE BACKUP ARCHIVE CLIENT

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Progressive incremental backup processing implements an
  efficient method to expire file system objects on the TSM server
  if they were deleted locally before the backup run has started.
  This efficient method is not implemented for the file list based
  expiration of file system objects. Since the file list based
  expiration method is used in GPFS mmbackup, the elapsed run time
  for this feature has a significant impact to the overall
  performance of the mmbackup operation. With this APAR the
  efficient algorithm used in the expiration processing of the
  progressive incremental backup will be applied for the file list
  based expiration processing.

Problem conclusion

• A new approach was implemented for the filelist expiration
  process. It no longer queries the server for every individual
  file and fills in the transaction based on the TXNGROUPMAX
  option  value.
  

Temporary fix

• Please contact IBM support for 6.4.0-based workaround if
  needed before 6.4.1 is available.
