Error description

  • Tivoli Storage Manager server has to scan all grouped backup
    objects from application files and to verify that each Meta-data
    object has the corresponding Data-data object available, per
    current design.
    Since Exchange server 2010 Microsoft changed the default size of
    the log files to 1 MB due to performance reason in a DAG
    environment, there might be a huge number of objects (several
    thousands) grouped together.
    Depending on the number of mailbox databases and the number of
    backup versions, kept from each mailbox database, the response
    on a query for all backup objects, issued by Tivoli Storage
    Manager for Mail, Data Protection for Exchange may take a very
    long time, even if just the few FULL backups will be listed.
    
    Data Protection Versions Affected:
    Tivoli Storage Manager Server on all supported platforms and at
    all current supported versions.

Local fix

  • Limit the number of objects that has to be queried by:
    1) Query for active backups from all mailbox databases only.
    2) Query for all backup objects - active and inactive - from one
    mailbox database only.
    
    Increasing the size of the log files might also be an option on
    a single Exchange server installation, but this is not
    recommended in a DAG environment
