Error description

  • Restoring a virtual machine that was backed up from a datastore
    on Netapp or IBM N-series storage can fail with one of the
    following errors :

    1.
    Restoring disk [DATASTORE] VMNAME/VMNAME.vmdk (Hard Disk 1),
    Capacity: xxx   (san)[receiving]
       Restoring FULL (timestamp) - bytes to restore: xxx
     ** Unsuccessful **
    ANS5283E The operation was unsuccessful.
    Unmount virtual machine disk on backup proxy for VM 'VMNAME'
    Restore of virtual machine VMNAME failed with rc = -1
    ANS4177E Full VM restore of VMware Virtual Machine 'VMNAME'
    failed with RC=-1 target node name='TARGET', data mover node
    name='DATAMOVER'

    The following is logged to the dsmerror.log:

    ANS0216E The dataBlk bufferLen value is zero.

    This situation can occur if the datastore resides on NetApp or
    N-series storage and the vmdk disk files were modified using
    mbralign utility from the storage vendor. The cause for this
    situation is a defect in the Netapp and IBM N-series utility
    which updates the VMDK descriptor file incorrectly.

    Platforms and versions affected:
    all versions of Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments
    and backup archive client with VMware backup/restore integration

    Initial Impact:
    Low

    Additional Keywords:
    tsm baclient tsm4ve netapp mbralign nseries n-series vm vmdk
    sectors dsmc dsmagent nas

Local fix

  • If the corrected version cannot be used, temporarily use the
    following testflag for the failing restore:
    TESTFLAG VMRESTORE_INCVMDKSIZE
    Once the restore is done, the testflag should be removed from
    the dsm.opt file again.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Backup-archive client versions 6.2, 6.3, and *
    * 6.4 running on Microsoft Windows and Linux *

    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply fixing level when available. This *
    * problem is currently projected to be fixed *
    *                 in 6.3.1 and 6.4.1. 6.2 customers need to    *
    * upgrade to 6.3.1 or 6.4.1. These targets are *
    * subject to change at the discretion of IBM. *
    ****************************************************************
    The issue is caused by NetApp's mbralign utility. More info:

Problem conclusion

  • The backup-archive client now verifies during restore that the
    disk size reported by VMware is equal to the one TSM Server.
