Error description
In a GPFS multinode clusters with several HSM nodes, doing distributed recalls using "hsmdistributedrecall=YES" it's possible to get ANS4007E if not all filesystems are mounted on the node processing the recall request. It is likely to happen: 1) if there is a lot of recalls for the same HSM managed file system in parallel; 2) the maxrecalldaemons option is set to some low value such as 2 (the minimum). The documentation also incorrecly states the following: You can control distributed recall by setting the option hsmdistributedrecall to YES on all source nodes that you do not want to recall files. It should instead read: You can control distributed recall by setting the option hsmdistributedrecall to YES on all source nodes that you do want to recall files. Versions Affected: The issue affects all HSM versions on AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS multinode clusters with several HSM nodes. Initial Impact: medium
Local fix
Mount all filesytems used for distributed recalls on alll the nodes that will process the recall requests.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Version 5.4 to 6.3 HSM clients running on * * AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS platforms in a * * multi-node GPFS cluster environment. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: See ERROR DESCRIPTION. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply fixing level when available. This * * problem is currently projected to be fixed * * in levels 6.2.5 and 6.3.1. Note that until * * these levels are available, this * * information is subject to change at the * * discretion of IBM. * **************************************************************** *
Problem conclusion
Upon the fix, if a recall request cannot be processed remotely, it is processed locally by default. A new testflag 'NoRecallRebalance' has been added in order to revert to the previous behavior when such a recall request is aborted due to ANS4007E. The following text from the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management for UNIX and Linux User's Guide will be updated: " Chapter 3. Configuring the HSM client "Space management for AIX GPFS and Linux x86_64 GPFS clusters" section: ... You can control distributed recall by setting the option hsmdistributedrecall to NO on all source nodes that you do not want to recall files. ... " The text is also updated in two technical documents: - Technical document #7017800 "Updates for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management (HSM) for UNIX and Linux User's Guide V6.2" - Technical document #7022173 "Updates for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management (HSM) for UNIX and Linux User's Guide V6.3"
