Error description

  • Sysback 6.1.2.6
    aix 6.1

    Customer rewinds the tape with tctl.
    Then uses the -n flag to not rewind the tape:

    sysback -f /dev/rmt0 -T chrp -k 64 -n -d test non working -M -E
    /usr/lpp/sysback/exclude.list -u sdsvg

    He receives the message:

    NOTE: This backup is not the first backup on the media, and
    therefore will not be bootable. The first backup on this media
    must have been created at the same AIX level in order to boot
    from this tape and install from this backup.

    the debug shows that sbdevice returns a 1 which means:

    ---------------------
    sbdevice -s
    Checks if the tape drive is currently at the beginning of the
    tape.
    RC 0 indicates the tape is not rewound;
    RC 1 indicates the tape is rewound.

    =================

    Problem started after upgrading sysback to 6.1.2.6 and aix 6.1.
    I compared /use/sbin/sysback 6.1.2.6 to 5.6.8.  The sbdevice
    logic seems to have changes from 5.6 to 5.8.

Local fix

  • use -e flag to stack backups
