APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• If a FlashCopy Manager for SQL VSS backup operation is
  interrupted abnormally while the VSS objects are about to be
  committed the backup remains "in progress" instead of properly
  exiting at the end of the process.
  
  Example:
  If a backup of a database db1 (with version exists=1)  is
  interrupted abnormally,  that backup is left "in progress"
  instead of properly exiting at the end of the process. The next
  backup operation that is attempted will attempt to delete the
  oldest backup for db1 based on the defined backup retention
  policy. However, the oldest backup in this scenario is the one
  left  in progress. Since, the a backup is still "in progress":
  
  - "ANS2719E A previous backup started on 'MM/DD/YYYY hh:mm:ss',
  is using the resources needed for new backup is still pending. "
  mesage will be issued
  - the backup will not be deleted (due to the fact that current
  backup is still on going)
  - the new backup operation fails with the message
   ANS1768E TSM was unable to find space for a new snapshot
                    TSM function name : vssInitBackupSpec;
                    TSM function      : No Space available for new
  backup
   because there  is no space available for a new backup.
   It's not normal behaviour to attempt to delete the backup in
  progress in order to create a new backup. A new backup (i.e.
  snapshot) should not just be created if the space for only one
  version is allocated, so the out of space error is retuned.
  
  
  
  Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
  The following can be seen in the logs:
  
  tdpsql.log may show:
   ANS1236E (RC115)  An unexpected error occurred.
   ACO5060E A Tivoli Storage Manager API error has occurred.
  
  In some cases, the following message may also be present:
  .
  "backup of db $NAME is complete, return code is 418"
  .
  This is a general message indicating that there has been
  some problem detected by a VSS requestor component. However,
  to determine which VSS requestor component had the error,
  additional examination of the dsmerror.log is required.

  dsmerror.log:
  ANS2719E A previous backup started on '02/18/201106:00:36', is
  using the resources needed for new backup is still pending.
  ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
     TSM function name : CLocalPolicyManager::lpmFindSpace
     TSM function      : Error in versionBasedPolicyUsingTSM.
     TSM return code   : -1

  *                 FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor when used    *

  If a FlashCopy Manager for SQL VSS backup operation is
  interrupted abnormally while the VSS objects are about to be
  committed inconsistent backup should be properly deleted at
  the end of the process.
  

Problem conclusion

• Backup-archive client agent
  The FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor component was changed so
  that any interrupted FlashCopy Manager for Exchange or
  FlashCopy Manager for SQL VSS backups are cleaned up at the
  start of the next backup, restore, or query operation.
