APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • svc provisioning in tpc creates multiple host entries when a
    single host has multiple ports/WWPNs. it should create only one
    host entry, and list the different ports/paths.

Local fix

  • use svc gui/cli for provisioning instead of tpc.

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of TPC 4.2.1 *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: TPC's behavior in Hostport assignment *
    * provisionig is that TPC handles each *
    * single Hostport alone. TPC does not *
    * group any Hostports together to Hosts, *
    * even if that is possible with a *
    * storage system like SVC. *
    *                                                              *
    * The effect is that the customer sees *
    * many host definitions defined at the *
    * storage system with only one WWPN *
    * inside, sometimes multiple for the *
    *                      same physical host.                     *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    TPC won't change this behavior. There are design reasons for
    making sure that hostport assignment operations can succeed
    in the most flexible ways to combine LUNs and WWPNs with
    each other. If customers want to have multiple Host WWPNs
    defined in the storage system as one Host, they have to
    predefine the Host definition in the storage system user
    interface. TPC will then reuse that definition. Otherwise,
    TPC will always create a new definition for every single
    unknown Host WWPN.

Problem conclusion

  • TPC added a config option, which allows the customer to
    allow TPC to define a set of WWPNs in one host definition.
    Whenever customers then do hostport assignment with many
    hostports, TPC will then create only one new host definition
    for all new unknown WWPNs, instead of many host definitions.
    This option is only changing the behavior for SVCs.
