IC70269: PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS ON LEVEL 6.1.4.0 OF THE TIVOLI STORAGE MANAGER SERVER

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• There are two performance issues in the 6.1.4.0 version of the
  Tivoli Storage Manger Server.
  
  The first issue is an increased number of connects to DB2.  To
  determine if a server is experiencing this issue enable server
  instrumentation.  If there are threads that have a connect
  time greater than 30% of the total time used by that thread
  then the fix for this APAR will improve the
  performance for that thread.
  
  The functions that are affected by this first issue are:
  1. incremental backup of small files using
  MEMORYEFficientbackup=Yes
  2. backup of the windows system state
  3. no query restore of small files
  4. archive of small files
  
  The second issue is caused by serialization.  To determine if
  the server is affected by this problem use the SHOW THREADS
  command.  The output will show heavy contention for the TMV
  mutex and that it is held by dbiEndTxnPhase2.
  
  This second issue can be experienced by any Tivoli Storage
  Manager server with a heavy workload.  The greater the number of
   running sessions and processes the more likely this problem
  will be experienced.
  
  These problem only exist in the 6.1.4.0 level of the Tivoli
  Storage Manager server.  If the server is experiencing
  performance issues at a different level then this APAR will not
  apply.
