Error description

  • A tape mount request from a library client may fail as a result
    of a deadlock condition on the library manager. Errors similar
    to the following will be seen in the library manager's activity
    log:

       ANR0379W A server database deadlock situation has been
       encountered; the lock request for the mms universe lock, will
       be denied to resolve the deadlock.
       ANR9790W Request to mount volume *SCRATCH* for library client
       LIBCLIENT failed.

    The problem is most likely to occur when there are active LABEL
    LIBVOLUME, RELABEL and/or CHECKIN LIBVOLUME processes running on
    the library manager at the time the tape mount is requested.

    Platforms affected:
    All TSM Servers

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    A trace (DEADLOCK flag) on the library manager will show that
    the deadlock condition occurs when one transaction is holding
    the 'mms universe' lock (lock type 23000), while trying to
    acquire the 'ic lock voltype' lock (lock type 77778). The other
    transaction is holding the 'ic lock voltype' lock and trying to
    acquire the 'mms universe' lock, as seen below:

       A Deadlock was found:
       Transaction 0:121244072.
         Waiting for Lock mode sLock on: Type=77778(unknown),
         NameSpace=19, Key=''
         Held by transaction 0:121244067 in mode xLock.
       Transaction 0:121244067.
         Waiting for Lock mode xLock on: Type=23000(mms universe),
         NameSpace=0, Key=''
         Held by transaction 0:121244072 in mode xLock.
