Error description

  • The normal Tivoli Storage Manager behavior is to store all
    Windows file system names in lower case.
    
    Here the following problem occurs with file systems mounted with
    uppercase characters in their name :
    . Those files systems are saved to a new uppercased file space
      at each backup attempt
    . The previous file space is renamed to lower case
    . A suffix is added to the renamed file space after the second
      backup.
    . A restore from GUI will show all the file spaces created.
    
    This occurs only if the ASNODENAME option is used during backup.

    Steps to recreate
     1. Mount file system into directory for example : q:\mnt\path\C
        (note that C is upper case)
     2. Run multiple  incremental backups with the ASNODENAME option
     3. Check the name of the file spaces on TSM server:
    
    Result after N backups were done =>

    File space (35)  \\hostname\q$\mnt\path\c
    File space (36)  \\hostname\q$\mnt\path\c_save_01
    File space (37)  \\hostname\q$\mnt\path\c_save_02
    ...

Local fix

  • - Do not use mount path that has uppercase characters
    - Or use tsm client v6.2.0.0
    - Or, if possible , do not use ASNODENAME option

Problem conclusion

  • The client has been fixed so this problem no longer occurs.
    After applying this fix, backup data will be stored in
    lowercase file space names.
