Error description
A Tivoli Storage Manager server may appear to hang on startup. The server startup console messages will show the server is deleting scratch volumes belonging to a storage pool defined with a device class type of SERVER, also known as virtual volumes. The server fails to complete its initalization. For example : Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Version 6, Release 1, Level 3.1 Licensed Materials - Property of IBM (C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1990, 2009. All rights reserved. ANR9999D_3034870971 smExecuteSession(smexec.c:1970) Thread<nn>: Server failed to initialize - Time Out. At the same time, there is a thread in charge of writing out the volume history information to the volume history file that is holding the lock. A server trace (SESSION DBSTMT) will show a trace accessing the volume history file. For example : <timestamp> [nn][tbcli.c][4635][RdbFetchAndGetNextResponse]: Performing fetch for icvolhst.c(3510) : 'SELECT DATETIME,VOLTYPE,SERIES,OPERATION,STREAM,SEQNUM,UNIQUE, DB2OBJID,VOLNAME,DEVCLASS,COMMAND,VOLLOC,ORMDATETIME,ORMSTATE, HOMEPOS,DB2HL,DB2LL,TOTALDATABYTES,TOTALLOGBYTES,LOGBLOCKNUM FROM "TSMDB1"."SEQ_VOLUME_HISTORY" ORDER BY DATETIME, VOLTYPE, SERIES, OPERATION, STREAM, SEQNUM, UNIQUE, DB2OBJID FOR READ ONLY OPTIMIZE FOR 10 ROWS WITH UR --nn' TSM Versions Affected: TSM Servers V5.4, V5.5, V6.1 and V6.2 on all platforms. Additional Keywords: zz61 zz62 IC62259 vv virtvol virtualvol
Local fix
1. Comment out VOLUMEHISTORY option in dsmserv.opt file 2. Start TSM server and let scratch virtual volumes get deleted 3. Stop TSM server and uncomment the VOLUMEHISTORY option 4. Restart TSM server with original options
