Error description

  • In Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) version 6.1, when running a
standard incremental backup for an NFS mounted
NAS volume snapshot on a NetApp
or IBM N-series NAS filer, the existing files will be
treated as if they were deleted from the system. Depending on
the TSM policy for these files the active and inactive versions
can expire. Note: a selective backup at version 6.1 will
recognize the NFS mount point and perform a full backup of files
    on the NAS filer volume.

In TSM version 6.1, new functionality was added to improve backu
performance using the NAS filer snapshot. To use the new snapsho
functionality the option SNAPDIFF must be specified when using
the command line interace. In addition option SNAPSHOTROOT, when
specified can prevent files from expiring. If neither SNAPDIFF,
SNAPSHOTROOT is specified when performing an incremental backup
the TSM client will treat the files belonging to the snapshot
as if they have been deleted. Specifically, this behavior
only applies to the files that have .snapshot in their path.
    .
    Initial Impact:
    Medium
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
    All current v6.1 clients
    .
    Additional Keywords:
Network Attached Storage NAS Netapp N-series NFS SNAPSHOT
    SNAPDIFF SNAPSHOTROOT

Local fix

  • Specify option SNAPSHOTROOT when performing a backup
of an NFS mounted NAS volume snapshot, or perform
incremental bakcups of NAS volumes using the SNAPDIFF
option. See the Tivoli Storage Manager Client User's
Guide on how to use SNAPDIFF or SNAPSHOTROOT.

Problem conclusion

  • The problem has been fixed so the expiration no longer occurs.

In addition, the following information was updated in the
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for UNIX and Linux Backup-Archive
    Clients Installation and User's Guide:

In Chapter 4. Backing up your data
-> Performing an incremental, selective, or
           incremental-by-date backup (UNIX and Linux)
-> Comparing full incremental, partial incremental,
           incremental-by-date, journal-based, and NetApp
           snapshot difference

At the very end of the subsection, this text follows:

If you perform a full volume backup of an NFS mounted or CIFS
mapped NetApp or N-Series volume, all the snapshots under the
.snapshot directory are also backed up. To avoid this
    situation,
you can do one of the following actions:

    1. Perform NDMP backups.
    2. Perform backups using the snapshotroot option.
    3. Perform incremental backups using the snapdiff option.
    4. Exclude the .snapshot directory from backups. This method
is preferred when you are doing an incremental backup using
the snapdiff option and you schedule periodic traditional
       incremental backups.
