APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Expire inventory, under certain circumstances, may take a long
    time to start or may take a long time to process objects.
    
    Such a circumstance can be when VEREXISTS=NOLIMIT is used and we
    encounter a windows systemstate backup issue where the system32
    directory was repeated over and over, thus
    the systemstate filespace occupancy is in the millions of files.
    After expiration starts processing for such a given node, it can
    take a very long time before it gets to the point of processing
    (examining and deleting) any
    actual data due to the time needed to derive the result set for
    files eligible to be processed.
    

Local fix

  • Create a nodegroup of nodes that dont include the
    nodes that have the problematic abnormally large occupancy.
    Run expire inventory with this nodegroup, to get relief during
    normal processing.
    For the affected nodes, run expiration on these, seperately at
    quiet periods.

Problem conclusion

  • The SQL query used to determine expiration candidates was
    modified to produce initial results sooner.  This problem may
    also cause an out of log space condition.
    Affected platforms:  AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, and
    Windows.
