Error description

• During a restart of the Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 Server, the
  Server will attempt to vary online all of the defined disk
  storage pool volumes.  Individual threads are started to vary
  each of the disk storage pool volumes online and each thread
  will attempt to create a connection to DB2.  A timing condition
  can occur in which a large number of threads accessing DB2
  concurrently can result in all available IPC (or other system
  resources) to be consumed.  This will result in errors similar
  to the following being generated in the activity log:

Problem conclusion

• A new server option has been added to control how the server
  varies disk volumes online at startup.  Specify
  
    VARYONSERIALLY YES
  
  if the initial vary online processes consume too many system
  resources and prevent the server from starting.
  
  VARYONSERially  YES|NO
  Specifies that the server should vary disk volumes online
  serially at startup, rather than attempting to vary all disk
  volumes online at the same time.   The default is NO (vary all
  volumes online at the same time).
  
  Affected platforms:  AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, and
  Windows.
