IC61138: TSM 6.1 CLIENT BACKUPS FAIL DUE TO INTERNAL SERVER ERROR ON THE TSM SERVER

Error description

  • During client backups TSM 6.1 Server gives warning:
    ANR0530W Transaction failed for session <num> for node <node> -
    internal server error detected.
    The client gives error and backup fails:
    ANS1301E server detected system error
    Trace shows the following RC error which is not handled in the
    code:
    With trace class SESSION enabled:
    [smnode.c][24665][CreateBitfile]:(996)bfCreate returned 79 when
    termReason is (0)
    [smnode.c][24820][CreateBitfile]:Unhandled result code (79) from
    bfCreate.
    The RC=79 needs to be handled appropriately so that the client
    retries the operation instead of aborting.
    This issue occurs when backing up to DISK storage pool. There is
    a lock contention issue that occurs only for Random Access
    (devtype=DISK) allocation processing where several client
    attempt to store fairly large objects for each session.  TSM
    needs to reserve space before storing data.

Local fix

  • Possible work arounds:
    1. For scheduled clients, increase randomization to prevent an
    "in rush" of several clients starting at the same time.
    2. Increase the size of the DISK storage pool to allow different
    allocation ranges in the storage pool.
