Multi Drive Upgrade Utility

Downloadable files

Abstract

This utility can be used to upgrade Drive Firmware on all drives in your system with a single command.

Download Description

This utility can be used on SAN Volume Controller, Storwize V7000, Flex System V7000, Storwize V3700, Storwize V3500 and Storwize V7000 Unified

Note: Storwize V7000 Unified customers should connect to the configuration node of the Storwize V7000 Block system to perform the steps detailed below.

The installation and usage of this utility is non-disruptive and does not require any nodes or node canisters to be restarted, so there is no interruption to host I/O. The utility will only be installed on the current configuration node.

Please go to IBM Fix Central Download pages to download the Multi Drive Upgrade Utility.

This utility is designed to ensure that it will not cause any impact to array operations. Consequently, upgrades using this utility may take some time to complete.

This utility will stop upgrading if any drive upgrade fails or causes a drive to become degraded or offline.

This utility has no knowledge of the contents of a drive bundle and will therefore always upgrade all drives, even if a drive is already at the correct level.

Usage Instructions

    • Install the Utility package (see below for more details)
    • Upload the drive bundle to /home/admin/upgrade
    • Run the utility. The utility command line options are described below

    Command Line Options:
      utilitydriveupgrade -drive <drive list> -filename <firmware package>

      utilitydriveupgrade -drivemodel <drive type> -filename <firmware package>

      utilitydriveupgrade -help

      Where:
        drive:
A list of drives to attempt to upgrade, use comma to separate

        drivemodel:
A single type of drive to upgrade. The type can be one of the following:
          • The word ALL - to upgrade all drives.
          • The Drive Model Number (e.g. ST9300603SS)
          • The Drive FRU part number (e.g. 85Y5862)
        firmware:
The Filename of the firmware package that is already copied to /home/admin/upgrade on the configuration node.

    Examples:
      utilitydriveupgrade -drivemodel ALL -filename IBM2076_DRIVE_20110928

      utilitydriveupgrade -drive 1,2,3,7,8 -filename IBM2076_DRIVE_20110928

      utilitydriveupgrade -drivemodel 85Y5862 -filename IBM2076_DRIVE_20110928

      utilitydriveupgrade -drivemodel ST9300603SS -filename IBM2076_DRIVE_20110928

If the configuration node fails over, then the drive utility will need to be reinstalled and the drive bundle will need to be re uploaded.
