IBM SystemStorage DS6000 & DS8000 Series DS Open API support for Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and Virtual Disk Service package for Windows Server 2003 / 2008.

The IBM SystemStorage DS Open API package provides support for the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) SMI-S interface and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and Virtual Disk Service (VDS) interfaces.

The IBM SystemStorage DS6000 & DS8000 Series DS Open API support for Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and Virtual Disk Service package is designed to be the hardware provider component for the Microsoft VSS and VDS infrastructure on the DS6000 and DS8000 Series of products.

With this capability, IBM SystemStorage DS6000 and DS8000 Series customers can now make a point-in-time ("shadow″) copy of a Windows host volume while the volume is mounted and files are in use. The IBM SystemStorage DS6000 and DS8000 Series leverages the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service framework to coordinate with applications like Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server, to provide a higher fidelity backup than previously available.

In addition to this, IBM SystemStorage DS6000 and DS8000 series customers are now able to query vital health and status information at the subsystem, drive, and LUN levels, as well as perform LUN management operations on RAID arrays. The IBM SystemStorage DS6000 and DS8000 series leverage the Microsoft Virtual Disk Service framework to coordinate with VDS-aware applications like Microsoft Diskraid and Qlogic SANSurfer VDSManager to also create LUNs in the storage array, unmask LUNs to hosts, or delete LUNs.

ESS customers using VDS should use the IBM CIM Agent for DS Open API version 5.1 with VDS version 3.2. DS8000 and DS6000 VDS/VSS customers can use the IBM CIM Agent for DS Open API version 5.1 or 5.3 and above.
