IBM TotalStorage Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT) v1.2 provides support for the legacy LTO Tape Products. See the list of supported Tape Products and Platforms in the readme below.
The ITDT Tool offers multiple functional capabilities that simplify the task of updating tape and library firmware. It is available for most major platforms and requires no special device drivers. In addition to the executable file, a README file is provided which describes the features and capabilities of the ITDT tool, provides downloading instructions, and gives detailed information on how to use the tool. See README file for exceptions.
Note: For the newer Tape Products and Operating Systems, IBM TotalStorage Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT) v2.0 or higher will be used. See URL link below.
The ITDT tool can perform the following tasks:
- Update microcode to all supported IBM LTO Tape Drives and Tape Library
products (non-IBM devices may not be selected), as well as IBM
3592/TS1120 Tape Drives.
- Upload IBM LTO and 3592/TS1120 Tape Drive and Tape Library dump files.
Used by support personnel to help troubleshoot a problem.
- Perform IBM LTO and 3592/TS1120 Tape Drive and Tape Library diagnostics, including IBM Tape Drive read/write diagnostics.
The ITDT tool is a command line utility. Invoke it by entering the executable from the directory where the tool is located. The Help feature gives a brief explanation of each function and shows the required syntax.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (32-bit IX86)
AIX 5L 5.2 and 5.3 (64-bit pSeries)
Linux systems with Kernel 2.4 and 2.6, glibc 2.2.5 and later (32-bit IX86)
Linux systems with Kernel 2.4 and 2.6, glibc 2.2.5 and later (64-bit pSeries)
Linux systems with Kernel 2.6, glibc 2.3.3 and later (64-bit zSeries)
Sun Solaris Version 9 and 10 (64-bit SPARC)
HP-UX Version 11.xx (PA-Risc and Itanium)
i5/OS 5.3 and 5.4 (iSeries / Series i)
The binaries are self-extracting archives that will contain one or more
program files and a readme file.
Please, ensure that you read the ReadMe file first, as it contains all of the
instructions needed to run the program. No additional install of the Test
Tool is required, once the program file has been extracted from the archive
it can be executed immediately. Contact IBM Technical Support if help is
needed.
Important additions to the ReadMe file:
The ReadMe file does refer to the Term "itdtinst". In those cases, it is
meant as a place holder for the actual archive name (eg. itdtinst1.2Aix
for ITDT-SE Version 1.2 for AIX)
