Abstract
IBM has determined that a certain RHEL 7.1 Linux kernel errata is available and mandatory to be applied to the Elastic Storage Server (ESS), to prevent a significant decrease in system performance under certain heavy workloads.
Content
This issue is applicable to ESS 3.0, ESS 3.5, ESS 4.0, and ESS 4.5 for ESS IO server nodes and the EMS node.
For more information about the RHEL 7.1 Linux kernel errata:
- for ESS 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5, see https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2016-1183.html
- for ESS 3.0, see https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2016-0103.html
For critical situations needing immediate resolution, IBM has this errata available for IBM ESS customers. Customers are hereby requested to email the IBM ESS team at ess-comm@wwpdl.vnet.ibm.com with the following information:
- Customer Name
- Customer Contact - Name / Email / Phone
- Customer Number
- ESS Order number(s)
- Number of ESS units and models including the number of EMS nodes present
- A configuration diagram
We request that you provide as much information as possible as it will help the team to work expediently. Once we receive the email with the information the team will validate it and get back to you with further steps on how to access and acquire the kernel errata with the accompanying update procedure.
As part of applying this errata, IBM also determined the Red Hat Extended Usage Support (EUS) add-on license is also required in order to be properly entitled for this kernel errata. IBM will provide specific instructions for obtaining this license in the email reply in the above procedure.
In the near future, all ESS orders will include this RHEL Extended Usage Support add-on as part of a RHEL subscription order. In the meantime, pending RHEL subscription orders should be manually upgraded to include this add-on license. More information on this the RHEL Extended Usage Support add-on license can be found at this link: https://access.redhat.com/articles/rhel-eus
