Potential Loss of Access to Systems Using 300GB Solid State Drives

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

Storwize V7000 and Storwize V7000 Unified systems using 300GB solid state drives (SSDs) are exposed to a very low probability issue that may result in a temporary loss of access to all drives in a SAS chain.

Content

In extremely rare circumstances a 300GB SSD may encounter a timing window event which results in the drive failing to inform its SAS chain that frame credits are available.

This behaviour will lead to a frame queueing condition within the SAS chain, resulting in a temporary loss of access to all drives in the chain until the affected SSD is physically reseated.

200GB and 400GB SSDs are not exposed to this issue.

Fix

This issue is resolved by the 300GB SSD 2936 firmware contained in the StorageDisk-2076-DriveMicrocode-20130314 fixpack:

www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003842

Important: Before installing the 2936 firmware, ensure that the V7000 system is running V6.4.1.4 or higher.
