In IBM Real-time Compression Appliance, do not add or remove a compression filter for a Data ONTAP FlexClone cloned volume's NFS export

Abstract

In IBM Real-time Compression Appliance, if a NetApp(c) or N series storage system which has FlexClone volume clones is configured in Compress Mode, selecting NFS exports as filters for a clone volume (to change it to non-compressed) will also change the parent volume export to non-compressed. This may impact access to compressed data in the parent export.

Content

When a NetApp or N series storage system is configured in Compressed Mode, all NFS exports of the storage system are compressed by default, except the exports selected in the Storage page. Since NFS exports of cloned volumes have the same NFS export handle as their parent volume, the compression engine treats the two exports in the same way.

If the storage system is configured in Transparent (non-compressed) mode:

  • If the export of the parent volume is not selected in Storage page, both the exports of the parent and clone volumes will be treated as non-compressed.
  • If the export of the parent volume is selected in Storage page, both the exports of the parent and clone volumes will be treated as compressed.

If the storage system is configured in Compress mode:
  • If the export of the parent volume is not selected in Storage page, both the exports of the parent and clone volumes will be treated as compressed.
  • If the export of the parent volume is selected in Storage page, both the exports of the parent and clone volumes will be treated as non-compressed.

Therefore, selecting a clone (or the parent) volume NFS export as a filter in the Storage page will effectively change both the parent and clone volume exports to become non-compressed. This may impact correct access to compressed data in either the parent or the clone volume exports.
