Data Loss/Data Error Scenario During Hung DDM Command Error Recovery

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

IBM recently identified an isolated scenario which can cause incorrect data to be stored in Open Systems environments or a track data loss impact (LRC 4940 posted errors) in CKD Mainframe environments. That scenario is associated with a limited subset of 15K RPM DDMs shipped from November 2007 to April 2009 that may still be running FW Level F2D0 or F490. A fix was released in April 2009 to handle the underlying hung command scenario and it has been determined that the same fix properly resolves this newly identified issue. (To date, IBM has only identified one confirmed occurrence of this issue across the population of affected drives since they were first released.)

Content

IBM provides the following two options to customers for updating DDMs in their environment using the affected firmware levels:

  1. Disruptive DDM Firmware Codeload with Fix contained in F4A0 or F592.  These levels exist on subsystems running the following DS8000 Bundles:
    • 63.1 Family:  63.1.59.0 or higher
    • 64.1 Family:  64.1.27.0 or higher
    • 64.2 Family:  64.20.134.0 or higher
    • 64.3 Family:  64.30.78.0 or higher
  2. Concurrent DDM Firmware update with F593 using ICS for machines running Bundles 63.1.x or higher is presently in test - target availability March 2012.

Identification Methods
  1. An Info Alert is being released to notify SSRs of specific subsystems containing DDMs with F2D0 or F490 Firmware. SSRs will contact clients with subsystems on the affected list to provide additional details along with Q & A information to address questions and concerns. Contact will be made via Phone, Email or On-site visit to discuss the potential exposure and options available. If you require additional details about the exposure beyond what has been provided by the SSR, or you have not been contacted and you are concerned that your subsystem may be exposed,  please contact IBM at the following Email address, [email protected] or DS8000QWTeam/Tucson/IBM, for additional assistance.
  2. An “As Required ECA 986” is being released to provide SSRs with instructions describing how to update the DDM firmware for clients that request this update.
