Potential DS8700/DS8800 Loss of Access and Job Abends due to repeating device warmstarts with IMS/WADS workloads V10 or V11 while running Release 6.1 or higher

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

When running special WADS/DS8000 synergy operations (on bundles 76.10.x.y, 86.10.x.y), it is possible to hit a DS8700/DS8800 locking issue. This locking issue can result in escalating recovery in the DS8700/DS8800 if the locking issue continues to occur. DS8100/DS8300 and IMS V12 and above users are not exposed to this issue.

Content

The special WADS/DS8000 synergy support was added in both IMS Maintenance (IMS V10 APAR PM44110 as well as IMS V11 APAR PM19513) and DS8000 microcode (Release 6.1 Bundle 76.10.122.0 [DS8700] or 86.10.135.0 [DS8800] and above). This support must be in both the host system and DS8000 in order for the new WADS/DS8000 synergy operations to occur. However, once the synergy operations can occur, a DS8000 locking issue is exposed. This locking issue results in an internal error recovery which will result in a DS8000 cluster fail over. Fail over can lead to a loss of access and Cache Fast Write (CFW) Job Abends.

Mitigation

Avoiding the installation of, or removing, APARS PM44110 (in IMS V10) or PM19513 (V11) will avoid the issue. For IMS V12, WADS was redesigned and does not use keyed records.

Resolution

A fix is now available in microcode bundles 76.20.87.0 or higher for DS8700s and in 86.20.111.0 or higher for DS8800s.
