Abstract
When a 2145 San Volume Controller (SVC) is attached to the DS8700/DS8800, a specific hardware error may occur in which the path retry takes longer than expected. The SVC path error detection and recovery may not complete in time to prevent a loss of access.

In certain situations, a DS8700/DS8800 host bay may be fenced resulting in a loss of adapter cards within that bay as part of normal hardware error management. Multi-Path I/O host systems are the recommended recovery solution. These are designed to detect a loss of path(es) and use alternate path retry to drive the I/O operation to another host port/adapter located in an alternate host bay. The delay between fencing the adapter bay and issuing a command to "drop light" on the host adapter is inadequate time for the 2145 San Volume Controller path error detection and recovery, thereby allowing a loss of access.
Mitigation
When a San Volume Controller is attached to DS8700 and/or DS8800, it needs to update the storage firmware to the levels identified below. DS8100/DS8300 are not affected.
Resolution
Firmware fix for DS8700 is available in Bundle 75.15.59.0 or higher.
Bundle 75.15.84.0 is recommended because of additional error management enhancements in this release.
Firmware fix for DS8800 is available in Bundle 86.0.173.0 or higher.
Bundle 86.10.139.0 is recommended because of additional error management enhancements in this release.
